Fundraising for Orphaned Joey’s

Every year at Kinky Curly Straight we like to finish the year with a big fundraising drive and 2016 is no different. Our traditional 12 Days of Christmas always includes a great raffle to support our fundraising for local charities.

This year however the cause is even more personal to our team as we are raising funds for a great client of ours. Robbie has been looking after orphaned joeys, wallabies, possums and any other native creature that are down on their luck for years and always brings her little ones to the salon so our team can have cuddles.

Now looking after these little ones and their big brothers and sisters takes a lot of time, love and money. Once kangaroos and wallabies have been hand raised they can’t be let out into the wild and they stay in sanctuaries like Robbie’s where food and medical expenses are a constant. Interesting fact, they love weetabix – a little treat for them 🙂

Our team was lucky to get invited to come and meet all the baby joeys and kangaroos and spend time with Robbie and Anne (another wonderful lady who has a home sanctuary up in Adelaide Hills). Most of the joeys stories are very sad, from being caught in the bush fires, to their mums being run over by cars or shot by poachers. But lucky there are people like Robbie and Anne who take in orphaned joeys and nurse them to health and give them a beautiful life with love and friends.

We are raising funds for Robbie and Anne’s packs for the duration of December and ask you all to stop by the salon or give us a ring on 08 8363 5003 and donate some spare change, every little bit counts. In return you will go into our fabulous raffle, to be drawn start of January.

The raffle prizes are all donated by our great friends from GHD, Matrix, Kerastase and Kevin.Murphy, so you are in for some serious goodies.

And if you’re very lucky you might run into Robbie when she is next in the salon getting her hair done; check out her pouch as usually there’s a little joey riding along.

For more information on the Native Animal Network of SA group that both Robbie and Anne are a part of visit their Facebook page.

Thank you for all your support xoxo

We are loving the warm weather finally hitting Australia and are excited to share with you the new colour trends for the seasons ahead.

We spoke to Alyse, our colour expert, about the trends we will be seeing this summer and how to look after your new colours during the hot months.

‘There are so many new fabulous colours to play with this summer, but one thing is evident, the warmer tones are in this year. From butter blondes to rose gold and rainbow hair, warm, light tones are the hit of the summer” says Alyse.

With summer around the corner we are seeing a comeback of all things blonde. Hair naturally lightens in the warmer months as we tend to spend a lot more time outdoors in the sunshine. This in turn forges the way for the bright summer hair trends.

Blondes are always popular year round but this summer warm butter blondes are making a comeback. Whilst the platinum is always a top favourite, the cooler/smokey blondes are integrating a touch of warmth.

A warmer blonde doesn’t necessarily mean gold or brassy blonde. If you prefer the cooler tones but want to update your look then placing a few panels of butter blonde carefully through the head whilst keeping the overall base cool will really make your look pop.

We are constantly being asked to recreate sun kissed looks seen on Pinterest and Instagram. The technique used in most of these popular styles is known as foilyage. This technique is great for clients who are wanting to go a lot brighter and blonder for summer without the  6 week upkeep.

The foilyage technique incorporates the popular balayage technique, combined with baby-lights and soft hint of ombre. Baby-lights are carefully placed throughout the head to ensure there is light from the roots to the ends of the hair. The surrounding roots are left mostly untouched with beautifully placed splashes of balayage emulating the areas touched by the sun.

It has been said that 2016 is the year of the rose gold colour. Whilst we are nearing the end of 2016 and gearing up for the start of 2017 the rose gold variations are just getting wider.

This summer we are seeing much more variations to choose from. We are still seeing a lot of soft peachy and pink tones but also taking on a deeper smoked apricot with burnt auburn tones.

Rose gold can look great on almost every skin tone as it can be custom blended to suit.

With the 70s vibe still dominating the runways beautiful blends of colours are going to be a huge hit this summer.

Colour blending or colour melting is great for those wanting to spice up there natural hair colour and give their overall look a subtle boost.

For a seamless colour blend several colours are chosen that are very similar but have a few levels difference in shade or variants in tone. These colours are then carefully applied throughout the head in a pattern that creates lift and dimension.

Something we have seen trending a lot on social media is secret rainbow hair. This one seems to be the answer for those who would love to have mermaid locks but can’t commit or for professional reasons are unable to.

This look is created by taking a hidden section (generally) from the back of the head. This section is lightened and then coloured with bright fashion shades in neat, even panels resulting in cool rainbow patterns when styled.

All these colours will look even better if you look after your hair with good quality shampoos and conditioners. In summer as we tend to spend more time out and about, get exposed to sun and sea/pools you only need to remember one thing, hydrate. Same as for your skin and your body, hydrating is key to ensuring good healthy and shiny hair.

Invest in hydrating and moisturising shampoos and conditioners and for that extra boost grab a masque and use it in place of the conditioner at least 1x week.

Now let’s talk boys, guys, bros, men.

It’s such exciting times for guys right now, seeing them truly embrace their looks and play with their hair; it has reinvigorated men’s hairstyling and barbering.

This winter it’s all about natural textures boys and they go great with a selection of looks we have in store for you; from sleek to pompadours, to heavy fringes; exciting times we tell you.

Inspired by our creative director’s latest men’s collection Speed & Freedom here are Uros’ top picks for men this winter.

Brit-Rock Indie Hairstyle

Don’t panic you don’t have to get a brand new cut, this trend is all about styling. So sweeping your hair forward is all it takes. Think Burberry campaigns and all those uber cool Brit-rock indie bands – they have this trend pack down.

Yes it’s huge, and not just for guys but the gals will be seriously rocking this trend in the coming months. With guys most of the cuts can be paired with an undercut – stick to the sides and back and you can do whatever you like on top – quiff, pompadour, even the Brit-rock indie heavy fringe works. It’s super versatile and brings a cool edgy look to a traditional men’s cut.

Modern Pompadour

Why you wonder – simple, it’s got texture and volume and looks absolutely hot walking past you on the street. It’s great for guys who can grow their hair longer on top, so talk to your stylist about wanting to get some height on your top.

Natural Texture

All above trends work great with natural texture. Get your barber/stylist to give you some natural layers to maximize the volume and texture, then embrace a couple texturizing products and you’re set.

Fifties Sleek

And if you’re feeling like going a bit more elegant for the day, take your cut and style it with good quality hair gel or mousse for shine and sleekness and you are instantly transformed into the cool guys from Mad Men. Go for a deep side part and take time working the product to give you a nice smooth clean finish.
